Training

The Colby Sailfish swim team was started over 25 years ago. It provides children ages 5 to 18 with an opportunity to improve swimming skills, compete in meets around the province and most importantly, enjoy the summer swimming with old and new friends.

Practice Times

The Sailfish practice Monday to Friday. The swimmers are divided into groups according to skill level with a consideration for age as of July 1.
(Times are estimates only and may be altered within the first week of training!!)
 
Bronze typically 8 - 9 year olds and under 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.
Emerald typically 9-10 year olds that are close to moving up to age group 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Silver typically 9-13 year olds 8:00 - 9:30 a.m.*
Gold typically 12 -18 year olds 10:30 - 12:00 p.m*
 
*The silver and gold practice group alternate practice times weekly. There may also be a dry land component included in the Silver and Gold training times.

Time Trials

Time Trials provide the swimmers with the opportunity to swim in a meet environment. Several of these will be scheduled throughout the season. They are usually held during the regular swim practice hours. These trials are run as a mini swim meet with 2 timers per lane, stroke and turn judges and a starter. Times are official and can be used to qualify for the Provincial Swim Meet. They are recorded and submitted to Swim Nova Scotia.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:

The required equipment for swimming is basic and relatively inexpensive. Team clothing is available, but not mandatory. Sunscreen is recommended.

Swimsuit and Swim Cap

Swimmers supply their own swimsuits.Team suits are available each season should you wish to purchase one.

Goggles

It is recommended that swimmers wear tinted goggles.

Footwear

It is recommended that swimmers wear appropriate footwear on the pool deck. Such footwear at the swim meets is essential.

Towels

One towel is sufficient for swim practices. Swimmers will need more than one towel at the swim meets.

Sports Bag

A sports bag is useful for practice and swim meets to carry belongings. All belongings should be labelled with swimmer’s name.
