Code of Conduct

As our organization continues to grow we seek to establish or clarify our policies. Our policies help to guide the organization and ensure continued success. Parents have a key role in developing a positive team and family environment. Attached is an Athlete/Parent Code of Conduct. The Code was developed as a guide to emphasize our organization’s commitment to making everyone’s involvement with our club a positive experience. All parents and athletes are expected to sign the Athlete/Parent Code of Conduct. Summer Swimming is an opportunity to have fun with your children, build relationships and enhance your community spirit.

The essential elements of character building and ethics in athletics are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. The highest potential of athletics
is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character”. Therefore I agree to the following:

1. I will respect all of the rules as outlined on the Colby Sailfish website. I will abide by all rules and respect the employees and the equipment of the Colby Outdoor Pool.

2. I will arrive to practices and meets on time and prepared.

3. I will encourage /practice a healthy lifestyle including nutritious foods and adequate sleep.

4. As a parent, I agree not to go on the pool deck unless invited. I will refrain from coaching any swimmer (from stands or any other area) during practices and meets. In addition any questions or comments I have will be directed in a positive constructive manner to the Team Executive only.

5. I will not engage in destructive gossip regarding coaches, staff, parents, opponents, athletes or officials.

6. I will respect and appreciate the value of volunteers and officials. They are parents trying to do their job well. All concerns will be voiced to the Team Executive only.

7. I will encourage/engage in full participation at practices, competitions, fundraising activities and social events. When possible parents will volunteer for timing, officiating and assisting in meets, fundraising activities and other social events. I understand that without parent volunteers our swim club would not function. Parents agree to volunteer in at least one or more activities during the summer season, either during a meet, fundraising event, social event or general operation of the Colby Sailfish.

8. As a parent or an athlete, I will applaud good effort by all athletes and offer praise for competing fairly and trying hard. I understand that personal best times are as important as winning. Athletes will support one another; older swimmers are asked to be an example to younger swimmers and help out with younger, inexperienced swimmers as needed.

9. As a parent, I will be a positive role model for all athletes and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all swimmers, coaches, officials, and spectators at every practice or sporting event. I understand that young people learn best by example.

10. I will not use profanity of any type at any time.

11. Swimming Canada has a harassment policy. The Colby Sailfish support and abide by this policy. It can be found on Swimming Canada website (there is a link on the Colby Sailfish website). All harassments should be reported to the Team Executive.
